The following tells of what Higgins Cremeans found we he made the journey to Mason County....

Information of interest - The Formation and history of Greenup County, Kentucky(formerly Mason County) taken from the History of Greenup County Kentucky by Biggs and Mackoy:
Greenup County was formed from Mason County in June of 1803. It extended from the Mason County line on the west to the Big
Sandy River on the east, and along the Ohio River for 40 miles. It was named for Christopher Greenup, who was born in Virginia in 1750,  fought in the wars against Indians, and was a colonel in the Revolutionary War. He was prominent in the orgainization of the district of Kentucky, was a member of the first congress, Clerk of the Senate, and became Governor of Kentucky in 1804.
Early settlers came to Greenup County either by the Ohio River or overland by horseback and wagons. When they reached their destination there were no good roads anywhere. Even in the dry season travel was rough going. The first passable road was probably from the Big Sandy River down the Ohio. Shortly after the county was organized a road was laid off from Greenupsburg, the county seat, down the Ohio River to a line across from the mouth of the Big Scioto River in Ohio. The present highway practically follows the old road. When the many furnaces from the area were in operation the roads near them were improved by using the slag from the furnace on them. Streams were either forded or crossed by crude bridges constructed for temporary use. Later, wooden bridges wer built, and some of the covered ones are still in use. The Ohio River played an important part in the early transportation and settlement of Greenup County. The first travel on the Ohio River was by canoes which brought hunters and adventurers; but when settlers came, they wanted to bring their possessions with them, so rafts came into use. The rafts soon gave way to the flatboats, large enough to accomodate several families with the household necessities, and with shelter against the sun and rain. These were the boats that brought the pioneer settlers to Greenup. After the flatboats came the keelboats which were one step in advance because they could be poled or rowed back up stream instead of being sold at New Orleans. Another type of boat seen on the river about 1825 was the storeboat coming from Pittsburgh loaded with merchandise which called at the settlements to sell and trade with the people. When the steamboats came they carried passengers and freight, and the towboats carried large cargoes of different products.

The following is taken from an early account of the county's resources as contained in Collin's History of Kentucky:
Greenup county is rich in mineral resources, the iron ore being of a superior character and seemingly inexhaustible. Coal is also found in abundance. the hills are covered with timber and the water power is not excelled in the state.
